Staging Possibilities: The Historical Importance of the Biograph Theater
02/26/2007 - 7:30 p.m.
The Chicago Humanities Festival, in partnership with Victory Gardens Theater, is pleased to host a distinguished panel of experts who will examine the history, restoration, and new artistic potential of Chicago’s acclaimed Biograph Theater. Now the home for Victory Gardens’ mainstage productions, the Biograph – in its many incarnations over the decades – echoes the series of transformations that have characterized the history of the Lincoln Park neighborhood it calls “home.”
In September 2006, Victory Gardens Theater triumphantly opened its new 300-seat mainstage at the historic landmark Biograph Theater. Built in 1914 as a neighborhood movie house, the Biograph possesses many of the distinguishing characteristics of the earliest, pre-“palace” motion picture houses designed to give understated legitimacy and respectability to a fledgling (and somewhat suspect) form of entertainment.
The story of the Biograph’s subsequent renovations and rebirths, including its most recent transformation into a world-class live performance venue, parallels various stages in the evolution of the surrounding Lincoln Park neighborhood.
“Staging Possibilities” will be held on Monday, February 26, 7:30 p.m., at Victory Gardens Theater at the Biograph, 2433 N. Lincoln Avenue, Chicago.
