Jump to the Volunteer Program The Internship Program The Chicago Humanities Festival (CHF) offers students and recent graduates the opportunity to gain professional experience in a nonprofit cultural institution. CHF believes in challenging interns with relevant, interesting projects and making them full members of the Festival team. Interns leave CHF with a practical appreciation for the demands and rewards of nonprofit work. CHF offers three intern sessions per year. Internships require a commitment of 15-28 hours a week for approximately three months. The Chicago Humanities Festival does not offer paid internships, but is able to reimburse some travel expenses. Internships can be coordinated to complement applicable college coursework. Students interested in cooperative education or course credit should contact their college placement or career services office.

Children’s Humanities Festival Position Description: Children’s Humanities Festival interns work to create and support public programs for youth within a nonprofit cultural institution. Responsibilities may include creating and editing study guides, production materials, and presenter contracts for Children’s Festival events; providing administrative support; supporting board committee projects; providing logistical support at Children’s Festival events; assisting with marketing initiatives and mailings; and occasional database maintenance. Skills Level: Excellent research, writing, and computer skills are essential. Graphic Design experience is a plus, as is previous experience working with youth. Children’s Humanities Festival interns are encouraged to participate in a nine-month internship beginning on August 29, 2007 and ending on May 23, 2008. Development Position Description: Development interns support the extensive fundraising efforts of a nonprofit cultural institution. Responsibilities may include donor research and stewardship, cultivating new funding sources, participating in the preparation of grant proposals and reports, researching and developing newsletter articles, assisting staff with special events, and providing administrative support to the Development department. Skills Level: Excellent written and oral communication skills are essential. Excellent research and computer skills are also necessary. Experience with Raiser’s Edge is a plus. Education Position Description: Education interns support an education outreach program within a nonprofit cultural institution. Responsibilities may include coordinating Education programs including Meet the Author Programs, creative writing workshops, the annual Summer Institute for Teachers, and Graduate Master Classes; providing logistical support at Education events; assisting with program planning for Classics in Context, a series of professional development sessions for teachers; researching and developing education resource materials and newsletter articles; and providing administrative support to the Education department. Skills Level: Excellent research, writing, and computer skills are essential. Graphic Design experience is a plus, as is previous experience working with youth. Finance and Administration Position Description: Finance and Administration interns assist the Managing Director of Finance and Administration in overseeing the administrative operations of nonprofit cultural institution. Responsibilities may include participating in the review of administrative expenses, budgets, and contracts; conducting research to improve office procedures, internal control, and policies; researching vendor opportunities; participating in regular budget meetings; and providing administrative support to the Finance and Administration team. Skills Level: Excellent organizational, writing, and computer skills are essential. A basic knowledge of accounting principles is a plus as is previous database experience. Marketing Position Description: Marketing interns assist with promoting and publicizing fall Festival and year-round programs. Responsibilities may include coordinating press release dissemination of information by identifying key media contacts, managing media contact information, and distributing press releases; assisting in the design, execution, and distribution of marketing materials; recording and archiving program materials; assisting with web management and updates; and providing administrative support to the marketing department. Skills Level: Excellent communication, writing, and computer skills are essential. A working knowledge of the Adobe Creative Suite and/or Quark is preferred. Production Position Description: Production interns help coordinate the technical and logistical needs of fall Festival and year-round programs. Responsibilities may include tracking logistics for Festival programs; visiting venues to determine their technical needs; drafting, editing, and circulating rental venue and partner venue contracts; working on the Festival’s audio archive; communicating with vendors for fall Festival and year-round events including audio-visual equipment suppliers and technical consultants; providing administrative support to the Production department. Skills Level: Excellent writing, organizational, and computer skills are essential. Database experience is a plus. Program Position Description: Program interns support the creation and realization of public programs within a nonprofit cultural institution. Responsibilities may include participating in program research for fall Festival and year-round programs; researching biographical information and contact information for potential presenters; maintaining detailed records of presenter contact and communication; tracking program logistics; administrative tasks including database maintenance, filing, and mailings; and participating in weekly Program meetings. Skills Level: Excellent research, writing, organizational and computer skills are essential. Database experience is a plus. Volunteer Program Position Description: Volunteer Program interns assist with volunteer development and front-of-house operations for fall Festival and year-round programs. Responsibilities may include recruiting and registering Festival volunteers; assisting with volunteer training; assisting in the creation and distribution of marketing materials for the Volunteer and Intern programs; communicating with vendors for Festival and year-round programs including caterers, audio-visual equipment suppliers, and technical consultants; and providing administrative support to the Volunteer Program. Venue Coordinators are Festival house managers responsible for supervising teams of volunteers and front of house operations for Festival programs during the 2007 Chicago Humanities Festival: The Climate of Concern, October 27 – November 11, 2007. This is a part-time position beginning with training sessions in late summer and continuing through the end of the Festival. Venue Coordinators must commit to working one Festival weekend: October 27-28, November 3-4 and/or November 10-11, 2007, with some mid-week day and evening opportunities.
