Classics in Context - Lord Jim
02/18/2006
The ongoing Classics in Context colloquia brings new life to widely taught literary classics, offering high school teachers the opportunity to discuss various aspects of a text with renowned humanities scholars from local universities. Texts are chosen for their potential to fit the annual CHF Festival theme. Complimentary continental breakfast and lunch are provided.
There is still space available at our upcoming colloquia on February 18, which will be a discussion of Joseph Conrad’s Lord Jim at the University of Chicago’s Franke Institute for the Humanities. The CHF is excited to welcome Gretchen Helfrich, former Executive Producer and Host of National Public Radio’s (NPR) Odyssey and current contributor to NPR, along with James K. Chandler, Director of the Franke Institute, and Lawrence Rothfield, Associate Professor of English and Comparative Literature and Founder and Current Faculty Director of the Cultural Policy Center at the University of Chicago.
Forthcoming colloquia will focus on selections of Afro-Caribbean Poetry: The Work of Luis Palés Matos and Nicolas Guillén at the Center for Latin American Studies at the University of Chicago in March, and J. Hector St. John de Crevecoeur’s Letters from an American Farmer in May at the Kaplan Center for the Humanities at Northwestern University. Teachers can earn Continuing Professional Development Units (CPDUs) toward teaching certificate renewal by participating. For more information or to register, call ext 22 or email .
