Festival Program
The Art Institute curator views cross-cultural perceptions and policies of early Chinese American relations, primarily through the lens of Lucy Calhoun—journalist, sister of the poet Harriet Monroe, and wife of William James Calhoun, American ambassador to China (1909-1913) during the empire’s revolutionary return to republican government. Lucy’s letters, news reports, and photos describe experiences with prominent Chinese officials and intellectuals, many of whom recorded their own meaningful time in Chicago.
