"Forget your troubles" for a singularly glorious evening as the Chicago Humanities Festival Benefit Gala celebrates the birth centenary of one of America’s greatest composers with a song-filled concert studded with stars of musical theater!

Be there as we welcome Broadway legend Leslie Uggams to Symphony Center’s Armour Stage, joined by vibrant performer Christine Ebersole, stage and television star Ron Raines, legendary jazz pianist Dick Hyman with his trio, and the exciting Montego Glover and Noah Racey. The production’s musical journey is narrated by Turner Classic Movies host Robert Osborne. Stuart Ross of Forever Plaid fame directs, while Aaron Gandy serves as music director and conducts the Broadway orchestra. Artistic consultants for the evening are musical theater historian Robert Kimball and ASCAP Director of Musical Theatre Michael Kerker.

(1905-1986), the jazz and blues-loving son of a cantor, partnered with some of the most brilliant lyricists of the 20th century, including Ira Gershwin, Johnny Mercer, and E. Y. "Yip" Harburg. His songs became signature pieces for many performers with whom he worked, including Judy Garland, Pearl Bailey, Frank Sinatra, Lena Horne, Cab Calloway, and Barbra Streisand. And the songs? Consider just a few: "Stormy Weather," "That Old Black Magic," "Come Rain or Come Shine," "Ac-cent-tchu-ate the Positive," "Blues in the Night," "I Love a Parade," "Get Happy," and the beloved favorite "Over the Rainbow." For more information about one of America's great composers, read "Come Rain or Come Shine" by John Lahr, Bert Lahr's son, a recent article published in The New Yorker, September 19, 2005.

You’ll have "the world on a string" when you hear some of the most innovative, moving, and joyous popular music ever written, performed by an outstanding cast and full Broadway-style orchestra. Don’t miss it!
