Joseph Lelyveld in conversation with Stephen Kinzer
04/20/2006
Former New York Times editor Joseph Lelyveld joins Times reporter and author Stephen Kinzer for a interview about his life and career, and the acclaimed memoir, Omaha Blues, which chronicles his fascinating journey into his past. Inspired by the discovery of a musty trunk of souvenirs in the basement of his rabbi father’s Cleveland synagogue, Lelyveld candidly examines a childhood that he long ignored, as well as his parent’s unhappy marriage. His journey through personal history unexpectedly touches landmarks of the past century—the Scottsboro trials, the Zionist movement, the Hollywood blacklist, and Mississippi's "freedom summer" of 1964. In the words of Joan Didion, “this astonishing journal of personal discovery" combines "both a powerfully affecting family history and a political history of the most complex kind."
