In 2002, Richard Florida mapped the movements of an ever-growing demographic in his controversial bestseller The Rise of the Creative Class. Now, with The Flight of the Creative Class: The New Global Competition for Talent, he’s gone worldwide. Indeed, Florida argues that this global competition for creative talent—and the choices that talent makes about where and how to live—will be a defining economic and social issue of the 21st century.
In the meantime, crucial to the success—or failure—of the United States is finding ways to mitigate gross inequality; harnessing human creativity; taking on political polarization; and retaining the traditional openness of American society to international influence. Beyond just the U.S., Florida’s sweeping look at how regions and nations around the world are adapting to the global creative economy holds valuable lessons for anyone interested in the future of economic prosperity, social cohesion, and cultural evolution. As a regional economist, an urban planner, and a concerned U.S. citizen, Florida promises to engage and provoke.
