DEBATE: When Jobs Leave Home
Every week, it seems, the media focuses on some U.S. corporation announcing their intentions to source their labor farther and farther from "home." It's the price we must increasingly pay, they claim, for effective competition in an expanding global marketplace. "We need to separate the myths and realities of global sourcing, and make it work for all Americans" according to Daniel W. Drezner, assistant professor of political science at the U. of Chicago. "How can we raise the labor standards of other countries and not lower ours?" asks Thea Lee, chief international economist for the AFL-CIO. For the CHF audience, the two publicly debate the topic, with Chicago Tribune editor Charles M. Madigan refereeing.
