Festival Program
The Festival closes its 16 days of programs with a glorious performance by world-renowned soprano Elizabeth Futral of vocal works by the "transplanted" court composer George Frideric Handel. New York City Opera dramaturg Cori Ellison traces the journey of the German-born violinist and composer who, as a young man, spent three years in Italy absorbing the baroque opera form before taking up residence in the court of the Royal House of Hanover. Handel spent the rest of his brilliant career—over 40 years—in England, where he became a naturalized citizen and composed such great operas and oratorios as Julius Caesar, Semele, Xerxes, Partenope, and the "Messiah."
Generously supported by the Elizabeth F. Cheney Foundation. Additional support provided by Kip Kelley, Sr.
